In 2008 238 restaurants participated in StreetSmart. Big or small, fine dining or café, CBD or regional, StreetSmart enables you to participate and give back to your local communities.

StreetSmart works best in restaurants that are passionate about their involvement, train their staff and participate by engaging with their customers. They are committed to building stronger communities and see StreetSmart as a great way to do just that while building relationships with their customers and staff. How it works...It’s easy

For the six weeks before Christmas, we are asking participating restaurants to propose that each table adds $2 or more onto their table bill, with little hassle and cost to you.

If you collect $40 per day from your customers (that’s 20 tables donating $2) and operate 6 days per week, you will be able to collect and donate $1440. With that StreetSmart could fund an entire recreation program in a crisis accommodation refuge for young homeless people.

It’s local

100 per cent of all donations collected by you go back to your local community. Smaller organisations desperately need the funds and the communities support and this is a practical way you can help.

Feel good — your staff and customers support StreetSmart

Since 2003, $730,000 has been raised and distributed, and diners and staff have been happy to contribute and get involved.

It’s good for business

We work hard to make sure our supporters dine out at your restaurant and leave a donation. We promote the campaign and your restaurant through our website, online media, food and wine media and general print media. We work with our corporate and business partners to encourage their staff to "dine out… help out" during the Christmas season. It’s a win win for everyone.

In 2008, 238 restaurants were part of StreetSmart in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and ACT and in 2008 we want you to join.

IMPORTANT: How StreetSmart works in your restaurant

  • Participating restaurants propose that each table adds $2 or more onto their table bill for the six weeks before Christmas. Use the tablecards or a footnote on your menu and get the staff to briefly introduce the concept.
  • You add the $2 on and the diner opts out if they do not want to contribute.
  • $2 or more (if indicated by the diner) appears on the bill as a ‘StreetSmart’ item. It is then easy to audit and record the dollar value collected.
  • Get your staff involved and make them proud of their contribution.
  • You need to have a computerised till system on which you can add a non GST, StreetSmart ‘PLU’ to charge and record donations. If billing is by hand, or you are using an older system, you need to contact StreetSmart directly to discuss possible involvement. There is no GST liability on any donations and they are simple to account for.
  • We support the campaign with print media advertising, cinema adverts and a comprehensive PR campaign — it’s good for your business.
  • Donations are to be sent to StreetSmart in January 2009.
