The Tipping Point

Australia is at a tipping point.

When it comes to homelessness, we are stuck in a loop of crisis response, where intervention and prevention get missed.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

With the right support in the right moment, a family on the edge can stay housed. A single parent can avoid sleeping in their car. A young person can find safety before everything unravels.

A small intervention at the tipping point can change – and even save – a life.

This giving season, help us stop homelessness before it starts.

Why your support matters

Frontline services are at breaking point.

Homelessness organisations are overwhelmed by the sheer number of people desperate for help. With limited resources, workers are forced into heartbreaking decisions about who is in greatest need and who must wait.

Across Australia, our partners are sounding the alarm – 1 in 5 report demand has surged by 40–50% in just twelve months, yet their capacity to respond hasn’t grown at all. They are stretched to the limit, supporting more people in extreme crisis than ever before.

Prevention is no longer optional – it’s essential.

Stopping homelessness before it starts is the most effective way to protect people from the trauma, instability and long-term harm that homelessness causes. Homelessness doesn’t happen overnight, it builds slowly, through stress, hardship, and the absence of support when it’s needed most. But with the right intervention at the right moment, that trajectory can change. Early support not only prevents crisis, it frees up overwhelmed frontline services and protects people from trauma that can take years to recover from.

A single timely intervention can keep someone housed, safe, and connected  long before they reach the point of crisis.

Mala, 30.
Employed, but one bill away from homelessness

Mala works full time, but a 20% rent increase this year has pushed them to the edge. More than half their income now goes to rent, leaving almost nothing for essentials. Competing with 20–30 people at every rental inspection, finding a cheaper home simply isn’t an option.

To stay afloat, Mala has started cutting meals, buying fewer fresh foods, skipping prescription medication, and even letting their car registration lapse all to keep a roof over their head. Mala knows that one unexpected bill could tip them into homelessness.

Tenancy support services can change this trajectory. With help covering urgent bills, financial guidance, and stabilising support, Mala can keep up with rent, regain breathing room, and stay safely housed.
